Hotel Curious wants to talk today about these fascinating exhibitions at the Palau de la Virreina in Barcelona.

Bruno Serralongue’s character is the one who decided to check with his own eyes the news read in the newspaper with the means of ordinary people, without the advantages provided to the accredited journalist.

Serralongue photos are apparently those of an incompetent journalist, who has reached most of the times when the event has already happened. But what the camera captures is the rarefied air that is, for example, in a luggage storege of a bus station when have been found in the lockers two dismembered bodies. It is a hunter of offals, of the blood trail, of the wreckage of a disaster, is a seeker of clues of stories already told. Les Faits Divers series is a good test of how this photographer works.

Bruno Serralongue prefers events in which ideological issues are discussed, such as the Intercontinental Encounter for Humanity and Against Neoliberalism in Mexico in 1996, a tribute to Che Guevara on the 30 anniversary of his death, the Expo 2000 in Hanover or the Summit for the Earth in Johannesburg among many others, and will be exhibiting at the Palau de la Virreina until late January.

Between 1972 and 1975, Susan Meiselas spent her summers and weekends following to women working in the “show girls” of itinerant fairs in New England, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. These young women climbed on stage with little clothes, under the inelegant comments of the conductors. At the height of the liberation movement of women in the United States, the intimate and laborious photographs of Carnival Strippers depict, using a discreet Leica camera without flash nor tripod women who are vulnerable to the danger of a sordid environment.

These photos were published in the book ‘Carnival Strippers’ in 1976, a publication which the author earned inclusion in the prestigious Magnum Photos cooperative.
